To more fully appreciate the rarity and potential of this coin, a little historical background: The year 1861 marks a momentous, critical turning point in United States history. It was on April 12, 1861 that the first shots of the Civil War were fired on Fort Sumter by the Confederacy, and the War Between the States officially began. The budding “hobby of kings” would now take a back seat to the crisis facing the nation, as it would soon become apparent as the war unfolded, that this conflict would not be easily resolved, and that much blood would be shed. The United States mint continued to strike proof coins for collectors, and there is an official mint record of 69 $10 Gold Eagles having been produced by the mint that year, but few of those coins made it into the hands of the public as all other interests and past-times paled in context of the storm clouds overwhelming the country. As a result, by 1862 only a handful of proof $10 Gold Eagles made their way into collector’s hands, and as was the custom of the mint in that era, the balance of the unsold proof Eagles were dumped back into the melting pot! The noted numismatic historian Walter Breen estimates that only about 10 specimens of the original 69 struck actually survived! In fact, checking the total number of examples graded by NGC and PCGS combined, it is exactly 10 coins. It can also be assumed that of these 10 coins, there may be at least a couple duplicates that have not been removed from those totals. Most significantly, of the 10 coins, the example being offered is the ONLY Proof 65 (all others are Proof 64 grade), and it is certified CAMEO as well! Far and Away the FINEST KNOWN!
