Description
Up for sale is a Ancient and Very rare "Sela" aka Tetradrachm from the Simon Bar Kochba Revolt 134/135 CE against the Romans. This war was known as the "Second Jewish War against Rome" the first being in 70 CE ( which they lost, resulting in the destruction of the Holy Temple) When Simon when to war against Rome the Jews didnt have many resources so for the few years that they fought & minted coins, many of the coins they minted were overstruck over existing Roman Coins. This coin in particular is a overstrike of a " Judaea Capta" coin. It featured a bust of Titus or Vespasian on one side and a weeping Jewess sitting under a Roman Trophy on the other.  Simon Bar Kochba would gather these coins, flatten them out, and re-strike them withhis own mintage. On some of the coins the original features can be seen below the strike, such as the head of Titus or Vespasian. On this coin the outline of the head is clearly visible on the reverse. On the Obverse of this coin is the Temple Facade, four ribbed columns with capitals standing on a row of ashlars. Between the 2 inner columns is the Ark of the Covenant.  The letters on the right and left  hand side spell out the name "Shim'on" read from left to right.. On the Reverse of the coin is a Lulav ( palm branch) and Etrog ( citron) surrounded by the words "For the Freedom of Jerusalem"   For referance the coin is a Reifenberg No, 167  & a Meshorer , No 199 This coin is in excellent condition for 1900 years old, and has great collectors as well as biblical value.  Please e mail me with any questions you may have.  Coins are my passion, especially ancient coins. I stand behind this coin and if you find it not to be authentic by a reputable numismatist, within 5 days, I will refund your money without question upon its return. PayPal, Bank Check, or Wire Transfer are ok. Shipping in the USA  $20.00 flat fee for UPS 2nd Day or Priority USPS.  Overseas $40.00 for Fed Ex. Item can be picked up ( if local) in zip code 08817, or in 11232 Mon to Thursday THIS COIN IS A "YEAR 2" It was not minted on the coin, but all books of referance indicate it as such. I just thought I should mention that. It was minted using a combination of year 2 and year 3 dies. Times were getting tough then for revolution against Rome, so many of the coins minted in that era were overstrikes of Roman coins.
